A vast bloodletting …

… I Sing the Body Dismembered - Walt Whitman - Obit Magazine.

The Civil War produced many profound social changes, but what it was most productive of was corpses. Six hundred twenty thousand died during four years of combat. The Union lost 360,000, 10 percent of the entire male population of the North aged 20 to 45. The South, with about 260,000 dead, lost 30 percent of its males between 18 and 40.
