Bryan Appleyard — Blog Archive — Winterson’s World. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)
The novel has Wintersonian themes — lesbianism, powerful women, intense love and an ever-present, implicit sense of transcendence, of getting beyond this world — but it is a full-blooded horror story. It also has Shakespeare in a walk-in part. When, as a teenager, she was working through English literature from A to Z, she was asked why she’d read Shakespeare when she was only on M. Because, she replied, he is the entire A to Z.
