Why We Build is a subtle, often eccentric but always entertaining guide to the building themes that have been consistent through the ages – sex, power, finance, eternity, hope etc.. Moore starts with the shabby, overblown, poorly-plumbed fakery of Dubai and ends in Sao Paulo amidst the staggering, sculpted brutalism of Lina Bo Bardi’s SESC Pompeia. The book is neither a thesis nor a survey, rather it is a highly subjective view of how architecture works. You may frequently feel lost in these pages, but that, too, is an architectural experience.
