Custer was no doubt a highly controversial and significantly flawed figure, but Mr. McMurtry's largely malevolent rendering is as incomplete as the purely heroic portrait painted after the general's death. Barely mentioned, for example, are Custer's exploits during the Civil War: From the First Battle of Bull Run forward, he fought valiantly in many crucial battles, helping repel J.E.B. Stuart's attack on the Union rear during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and blocking Robert E. Lee's escape from Appomattox in the spring of 1865.
