Hmm…

I have never heard Stevens described as an atheist before, and as one who regularly reads through the collected poems, it seems to me that his great theme was the quest for faith, a quest that hardly excluded the possibility of God. He did not occasionally visit St. Patrick's when he visited New York. He always did, sitting there in the silence. And I believe the story that he received the sacraments when he was dying.
