Maybe aristocrat isn't the right word. True aristocrats have the common touch. I spent a good part of evening once chatting with Otto von Hapsburg, whose pedigree was certainly impeccable. There wasn't the least thing snooty about him. Thoreau perhaps suffered from the desire for power that seems to have afflicted scribes throughout history.
