“I think it was the idea that, as a writer, you spend your whole life being an observer and then trying to make a record of what you’ve observed, and you may think, when you’ve gotten older—or old, as I am—that you’ve missed being an ordinary person. You’ve missed all the things that maybe you think most people spend their lives at …. And I think I had made a vow that that’s what I was going to do … the ordinary-person route …. But,” she said, laughing, “I didn’t prove to be very talented at it, because after a while I started writing again.”
