Somerset Maugham said that one cannot write well unless one writes much.

  1. Ah, the writer's life. And as for Maugham, in so many of his works, he undercuts his own maxim. He may have written a lot, but much of it is overwritten.

  2. Writing too much may have been one of Maugham's shortcomings — though he would have said that writing is what he did (sort of like Michael Caine and acting) — but overwriting, in the sense of purple prose, does not seem to have been one. He usually achieves his aim of clarity, simplicity, and euphony.
