Ah, the writer's life. And as for Maugham, in so many of his works, he undercuts his own maxim. He may have written a lot, but much of it is overwritten.
Writing too much may have been one of Maugham's shortcomings — though he would have said that writing is what he did (sort of like Michael Caine and acting) — but overwriting, in the sense of purple prose, does not seem to have been one. He usually achieves his aim of clarity, simplicity, and euphony.
