About the only thing we know for sure is that we are in the middle of something that we did not devise and that we have to somehow get through. There are lots of proposed answers and explanations on offer, some more interesting than others, some more likely, though none even remotely a sure thing. Which doesn't mean one of them isn't the one and only right one, presuming there is such.
