Albee, in other words, is not only protective of the unconscious as the source of his livelihood; he defers to it, and respects its territory. An unconscious has its own ways and moods and thoughts, he feels, and they should be respected by its host. Albee is a union man. The unconscious does work; therefore the unconscious has rights.
