People often claim they were being ironic (even though irony was the furthest thing from their minds) when they are confronted about and must justify something they said or wrote. It is a form of excuse. It is a way of explaining imprecise speaking or writing. I've on occasion been guilty of it myself. Yes, shame on me. But I feel better now that I have confessed my guilt. (No, I am not being either ironic or sarcastic.)
