Much in what he says …

… Reading a Poem: 20 Strategies - The Atlantic. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)



I am not in accord with all 20 — though I do see the point of them — but I am in agreement with the gist: Read a poem as you would anything else. In the case of a poem, it is the immediate recognition of the peculiar and the familiar in consort that sucks you in.
