If your reason for not doing something is that you don't want to be punished for it in the afterlife, you're rather weak morally to begin with. You do what is right because it is right, you don't do what is wrong because it is wrong to do that. Yes, there are gray areas. Atheists and theists alike have found reasons to kill and torture. The case for atheists doing such seems even weaker to me, since if this life is all there is, we should try to make is pleasant and fulfilling as possible. My own faith is grounded in a sense I have that I am meant to cooperate with my creator in my creation.
