Science today …

… Rethinking the Placebo Effect: How Our Minds Actually Affect Our Bodies | Brain Pickings. (Hat tip, David Tothero.)

She cites a recent study at the Harvard Medical School, in which people with irritable bowel syndrome were given a placebo and informed that the pills were “made of an inert substance, like sugar pills, that have been shown in clinical studies to produce significant improvement in IBS symptoms through mind-body self-healing processes.”
Excuse me, but what they were told they were given  was "an inert substance … shown in clinical studies to produce significant improvement in IBS symptoms through mind-body self-healing processes." That is not exactly the same as a placebo. What we would like to know is how do the results in this case compare to results when the pill is given to subjects without their knowing anything about it.
