Today's music …

John Vincent was born on this date in 1902. This is the third time I have linked to this piece, and I have been listening to it a lot lately. Why the Philadelphia Orchestra doesn't program it — and his Symphonic Poem After Descartes — is beyond me. Ormandy obviously thought it showcased the orchestra wonderfully — and he was right. But it is a good deal more than just a display piece. More than just about any piece I know of written at the time, it encapsulates what it was like to be alive and young in America in the '50s. (Oh, I know how awful that time is said to have been. Somehow, I never noticed. My buddies didn't seem to, either.)
