What is going on with Apple?

Having dealt for too long with the snowballing cluster of customer-disservice that is iTunes, I often wonder if Apple has what I think of as the Charlemagne problem: the institution relied so heavily on the forceful, omnipresent personality of its leader that it simply can't prosper without him, because he, like most leaders in history, either couldn't or didn't figure out how to create an institution that would survive his own demise and thrive. (Just a theory, but it's better than my backup answer, which is: "who can say?")
