Hmm …

… A Loaded Gun: The Real Emily Dickinson : Longreads Blog. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

Well, there's a lot of "I believe" and "I'm convinced" in here — both explicit and implicit — only I don't and am not. Miss Emily has come down to us as an elusive figure and I am sure she meant that to happen. I've never thought of her as the mad woman in the attic, and I'm not about to think of her as an enraged proto-feminist.

  1. Too many people try to understand her genius but fall far short (given their own intellectual shortcomings) and resort to labels more suited to themselves than to the poet. In other words, genius is immune to analysis by people who are not geniuses.
