I think the key to understanding O'Connor is that hers was a lived faith, and faith as lived often bears little resemblance to faith as thought about. It moves way beyond belief in a set of propositions.
So many of her characters live without faith, even avoiding faith, which seems reasonable to them, until suddenly it becomes an inescapable life and death issue. This kind of realism is powerful. Many critics resist such reality.
