  1. The midpoint of World War II, counting the American and Russian involvement, was seventy-five years ago. That is roughly as long ago as the Spanish-American War was for my college class. The Spanish-American War was a lot quicker and much less bloody than World War II, but it was rich in consequences. Yet I doubt many of my classmates could have given a coherent account of the actors and actions of that war.
