In her acclaimed and detailed biography, author Meredith Danemann notes that it was also at this time that Fonteyn had an on-and-off affair with the conductor and composer Constant Lambert (1905-51). According to friends of Fonteyn, Lambert was the great love of her life and she despaired when she finally realised he would never marry her.
