Sacrificing Wordsworth on the altar of De Quincey seems odd to me. Whatever his personal shortcomings, Wordsworth is undoubtedly the greater literary figure. And even in this account, De Quincey seems to have been a person best kept at a safe distance.

You're right, of course, that Wordsworth is the bigger figure (in more ways than one). He'll no doubt be remembered when De Quincey is forgotten, even if I personally care little for his poetry. But what an ego that man had. Thank you for your wonderful blog, by the way. I've read it every day for years.
