Perhaps the underlying problem is that people love to exaggerate for effect, and see nothing wrong with it. Not content to say that George W. Bush was wrong about weapons of mass destruction, his opponents said that he lied – which is a misuse of ‘lie.’ A falsehood is not the same as a lie. There is no lie without the intention to deceive; one can make a false statement in good faith with no intention to deceive.
