Thereby causing his chauffeur to do some belt-tightening of his own.

However, in the White House, while the rest of the country suffered through the Depression (a term Hoover himself coined), Hoover, dressed formally, enjoyed each evening elaborate dinners with a small army of serving staff and military orderlies in attendance. And, in a separate example of dimwitted detachment from reality, he permitted MacArthur's rough-shod, brutal, bloody removal of thousands of homeless Bonus Army hopefuls. Yeah, Hoover was a real piece of work!
