...I re-read, for the first time since high school, Thomas Paine's Common Sense. I'm glad I did: it's an exercise in concision, precision, and accessibility. And more: it's rational, composed, and with an awareness of both history and historical context. Great fun to re-visit that American classic! The last word is reserved for Paine:
"When we are planning for posterity, we ought to remember that virtue is not hereditary."
