Sounds a bit libelous, in my opinion.Perhaps the gent wasn't trying to filch an egg. Perhaps he was simply climbing that tree to slap a few baby squirrels.
...and the eggs survive the fall. :)

"His family said last night that he had climbed the tree only to take photographs ..."Yeah, right ...We get them out here, too, though they're usually looking for chicks - hawks, eagles, kites - rather than eggs ...They're an expensive nuisance, when they get stuck, and have to be plucked off a cliff, somewehere ...But, we lose even more, when they succeed ... some species of raptor have become quite rare ...
But you can't libel the dead, so the headline-writer was allowed free rein!
