... It is the inescapable duty of every decent citizen to express no interest in or enthusiasm for football and the World Cup - Theodore Dalrymple explains why. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)
I never attended a live soccer game, nor watched more than few minutes of a televised match, until my boy entered the 'rec' league here, in Midland, Texas.
I've learned a lot from my boy, and I've learned a thing or two from the game ... and I'm the better for it.
Frank DeFord once took his own audio shot at the game and its enthusiasts ... and ended up as the foundation for (the butt of?) one of the better soccer ads ever produced ... it's at http://www.nike.com/nikesoccer/justdoit/spot/video.html
Good luck, Team USA, in this year's World Cup. And best wishes to Manchester United, and their hopes of overtaking Chelsea, holding off Arsenal, and winning the Barclay's Premier League championship in 2007.
Soccer is adaptable, soccer will grow ... though it may not grow on you :-)
Hi Jeff, I'm neutral on this. I just posted it because of Dalrymple's cantankerous vehemence. Actually, the few soccer games I've witnessed, I've enjoyed (except the one I played as kid, during which the ball got kicked into my face). My good wishes extend to Team USA also. The rest of them ... I don't know.
I wonder how Jeff and Skint managed to post a comment yesterday --- Anyway, thanks for the link, today is the dreaded day so I am going to emigrate somewhere for a couple of weeks. Cathy is going to watch the Stella Artois tennis tournament tomorrow (Sat) so she will miss England v Paraguay. Everyone has gone mad over here, Skint being Welsh is somewhat immune but now is not a good time to be English. Especially when the team gets knocked out in the quarter finals as usual. (Incidentally, the cricket team, so heroic last summer, has been doing very badly against Sri Lanka, I heard they were bowled out for well less than 100 the other day.)
Boy, are we polar opposites on this one!

I am so uninterested I won't even bother to follow the link - yawn . . .
