Two nations ...

... separated by a common language. Minx wonders: The language barrier - a grey/gray area?

I think it's the American kids who don't get the English locutions, rather than the British having much difficulty with Americanisms. But American schools have tended to place a premium upon making sure that Johhny has fun, which means the poor dear mustn't be made to do anything that might be hard, with the result that in many cases, as the Don Henley song would have it, Johnny can't read.

  1. Sorry to burst your curmudgeonly bubble, but let me tell you, Frank, school ain't about fun. They may or may not be teaching, but it ain't laugh-a-minute. The only people who actually enjoy high school are the assholes who tormented everyone else.

  2. Well, Frank, that may be so, but the misery doesn't come from having to memorize the multiplication tables, or English orthography, or names and dates of historical significance. I remember there being a contingent of wrongballs even when I was in school, but they didn't dominate the place by any means. Tell me more - maybe it's time for someone who has experienced it to write about it and tell us all what the real story is.
