Interesting article on Popular Fiction Past. But my favorite Rider Haggard novel is not _King Solomon's Mines_, but _She_. And when you read that novel in light of Haggard's era -- of British imperialism on the Dark Continent, muscular Christianity, "angel in the house" women, boys' schools and birching brothels -- well, then, it's even more potent (and I use that word advisedly in this, our era of Viagra).
