Another bad bet ...

... by publishers: English footballer books. (Hat tip, Maxine Clarke.)

What this tells you is what publishers think they know about the public. What it demonstrates is how little they know about the public. Of course, the same could be said about newspapers. Want to know what people would like to read? I'll tell you: Interesting, well-researched, well-written , and non-tendentious stories.

    two months ago that one could enjoy these books "If you were heavily medicated, perhaps. If you stumbled across one after 25 book-free years on a desert island. If - although this one really is a little too fanciful - England had won the World Cup."
