... yesterday afternoon Debbie and I drove up to Doylestown to see the Michener Museum to see Duane Hanson: Real Life. Years ago, in Washington, while visiting what was then the National Museum of American Art, I turned a corner and practically jumped out of my skin, because I just nearly bumped into what looked like a woman sitting at a table in a lunceonette. It was of course a Duane Hanson sculpture. I was amused to watch other people react as I had - the piece was positioned in such a way as to ensure that people would be taken by surprise. Anyway, it was fun to see some of his stuff once again. My colleague Ed Sozanski weighs in on the exhibition here: An odd couple of art world (scroll down; it's the second item). I think Ed's take is about right - the appeal of Hanson's work is fundamentally its novelty.
