Bryan Appleyard has second thoughts ...

... about irony: Universal Disdain and Poured Scorn. I must say I love this: Paris Hilton is "the empty carrier for the entire culture of pallid, inattentive distraction."
What interests me about celebrity culture is that it doesn't really involve people, except peripherally. It is images - on a screen or magazine cover - that provide what little substance it has. A jaw-droppingly shallow form of idolotry.

Mind you, I don't know why everyone is so rude about Paris Hilton. I don't know anything about her apart from the odd picture of her in the newspaper, but she seems to me to be in that class of people like Victoria Beckham whose job it is to be photographed. Hence a bit of an easy target. I mean, Paris Hilton is not fooling anyone that she's someone to be taken seriously, is she? I just think there must be more "equal" targets for the wit and erudition of Bryan Appleyard.

  2. Ah, Maxine, you prove what a lady you are, coming to the defense even of Paris Hilton. And yes, you are right. Bryan has better fish to fry, as they say (though in the newspaper business it is so easy to lose perspective).
