This made me smile. Velikovsky was one of my mother's top five all time iconic authors--- totally revered (alongside Darwin, Jung and, in her later life, Stalin). I felt quite sad in a sweet kind of way, when I grew up to be a scientist and realised that V. was regarded as something of a crackpot.
I read a sci fi book in high school that talked about this as its premise. "The HAB Theory" by Allen Eckert. I googled it to see if it was still in print and lo and behold, found a website devoted to it!
It's been *many* years since I read it, but i still remember how chilling a book it was.
