This is interesting ...

... Lanier on Hopkins. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I wouldn't have connected the two myself, but it's an intriguing idea.

  1. That's interesting. I was into Lanier as a teenager, long before I knew anything about Hopkins. I have Lanier's collected works. His book "Music & Poetry" is a long essay on the parallels between the two forms; Lanier was also a composer and professional flautist. He collaborated with his friend Bayard Taylor on a USA Centennial anthem and oratorio. Lanier died young, from TB.

    The connection between music and poetry is something both Hopkins and Lanier were involved with. (I am too, as a composer, too.) So, it's a logical connection, actually.
