What's that ...

... about teens not reading? Teens buying books at fastest rate in decades. (Hat tip, Rus Bowden.

To the best of my knowledge, The Inquirer is the only paper that has a column devoted to Young Adult books.

I believe this is true, based on the sample/example of two teens who live in my house. Harry Potter assuredly has something to do with it, as does the allure of Barnes & Noble and the other megabookstores: They have fancy coffees there, the teen addiction of choice, and thus coffee and reading get happily linked. (The Godiva bars at the checkout counter are also a plus.)

Oh, yeah, and their friends are there too, quite often. The big bookstore with its cafe has become a destination of choice, like the mall.

My daughter is currently whipping through the oeuvre of Kurt Vonnegut, a distinct step up from what she was reading a few years ago ("Gossip Girls" -- rather shocking novels of sex & illegal substances set in a posh private school in NYC. A cross between "Desperate Housewives," "Sex and the City," and the "Gilmore Girls").

Son (13) is reading through Ursula LeGuin and Stephen King. Both teens will read the last Harry Potter and Rowling should win the English-speaking world's biggest literary award for getting so many kids back into the thrill of a good tale.
