I was for many years, like Christopher Hitchens, "an empirical student of the matter." Indeed, I have no doubt whatsoever that at the peak of my drinking career I could hold my own with any imbiber on the planet. I did a lot writing in those days, too. But I can't recall ever writing while drinking, let alone while drunk. Drinking was the reward for having done the writing. Though often enough it took the place of writing.
