There is still, I believe, in the yard of the house where I grew up, a maple tree that I raised from seed. In our yard now is a small lace maple that I - given as I am to magical thinking - feel a distinctly personal relationship with. Some years ago I walked through a state park with a guy named Herb Robinson, who was fourth-generation logger. I have never known anyone who knew or loved trees better.
