Yes, I have read that some book publishers are making their digital versions "reader independent" so the output can be read on any e-reader. I do not think this is the case for all publishers. Or maybe even all types of reader. I suppose some business models will want to restrict formats/content, although my own view from the outside is that a "neutral" format (any publisher's content can be read on any digital reader) makes commercial sense as well as being best for the reader (who can then choose whatever e-reader he or she likes best, and download content into it from any digital bookseller or publisher).
You can publish on Lulu as a book AND as a download, so I guess material can be made available to an e-reader.
