I found the letter from Mike Smith about "Native Americans" vs. "Indians" interesting. I used to hang with Indians back in my construction-worker days. And "Indians" is precisely how they referred to themselves. Never heard them use the term "Native American." And these were full-blooded Indians, not white guys claiming to have Indian blood somewhere back a few generations.
