Dissent with a price ...

... Prison court sentences blogger to 20 years, poet to two years.

...
Myanmar activists jailed for 65 years: family.

I should have posted these awhile ago, but I got sidetracked. Hat tip to Rus Bowden for both links.

  1. Hi Frank,

This is to imprison the opposition. Here is an article from Index on Censorship: Burma tries to silence opposition: A new crackdown on the country’s dissidents shows that Than Shwe’s junta fears the power of the Internet, writes Larry Jagan

It's getting worse now for blogger Nay Phon Latt and poet Saw Wai. Here is the latest from reporters Without Borders:

20.11 - Burma: blogger and poet transferred to remote prisons

Reporters Without Borders and the Burma Media Association condemn the transfers of blogger Nay Phon Latt and poet Saw Wai to prisons far from Rangoon.

Sentenced to 20 years in prison by a special court in Insein prison on 10 November, Nay Phon Latt has been moved to a prison in Pa-an, the capital of the southeastern state of Karen. Saw Wai, who was sentenced the same day to two years in prison, has been moved to Oboe, in the central region of Mandalay.

“These prisons are known for their appalling sanitary conditions,” Reporters Without Borders said. “In addition to being unjustly convicted, they must now serve their sentences far from their families and friends, in prisons where the conditions are particularly bad. The transfers have yet again highlighted the military government’s inhuman nature.”

Another part of the madness to transferring someone to a remote prison is to more easily inflict abuse, call it torture, because it is more difficult to report. Note too that these writers will be in prison with the most hardened criminals. Than Shwe is a sicko.

    Yours,
    Rus

  2. Dear God, no words exist, none, to describe nor communicate the horrific truth at the heart of darkness. On 13 November, another poet forcibly injected with HIV/AIDS virus?

Infuckingcroyable. What can anyone, let alone PEN, do about the horror, the horror?

Does not compute; cannot comprehend the endless varieties of unmitigated cruelty and evil on this rotten small ball. Pray. Okay; but, it's gonna take a lot of prayer to get those kids outta there.

Of course, it strikes one as supremely hystarious the advert accompanying this story is for an alcoholic drink in a lovely goblet; not a criticism of Reporters Without Borders; rather, a criticism of those who don't advertise there, I guess; if I had the bucks, I would do so in a flash. The guy who owns Virgin, e.g.? What's a million bucks to him (except a tax write-off)?

Is there a link for emailing the articles on the pages (and, I'm just blind to it? I would think that would be an essential priority (if that's not the case).

All suffering is relative, I know that; but, sometimes, sometimes I, believing I've heard and seen it all over and over, get knocked off my spots, breathing stopped. I don't question the existence of a deity; what I question is where does one locate the bottom below the bottom of alleged "human" depravity?

As I've said elsewhere, Sometimes, the heart is simply too shattered to communicate how shattered it is.

This is one of those times.
