I had lunch today with Jen Berger. This time last year, she was just beginning a one-month stint as my intern at The Inquirer. She was a principal reason I didn't announce my retirement at the end of 2007 (she wouldn't have been able to intern with me if I wasn't there). Today's lunch reminded me of what a pleasure it was to work with her. Jen isn't typical of her generation. But she wouldn't be typical of any generation. She is exceptional - and is refreshingly comfortable with that. Which is precisely why she always raises my spirits. As long as people like Jen keep coming on the scene, things are going to be OK.
