Here's a shorter mere 100 novel list for those with less determination (although some are multi-volume works). And I definitely agree with the Virginia Woolf quote about Middlemarch, that it's one of the few novels written entirely for adults; it's the only 900+ page novel I know of in which nothing happens that still remains ceaselessly fascinating.
