On Wyeth ...

... An appreciation of Andrew Wyeth.

... Artists, neighbors remember Wyeth.

... Weighing Andrew Wyeth.

I think Ed is right that there's a good deal in Wyeth that is dark. But I also think Terry is right that Wyeth is at his best in watercolor. I also think he is better when there are no people in his paintings.

  1. Nice set of articles. I was thinking about Wyeth this morning, and wrote something poetic, with more to come.

I think Terry's wrong in his final assessment. I think Wyeth is in the long run likely to be recognized as a painter more Modern than has been understood in many ways. He used his own representational language to get at the same psychological narratives of Modernism as did the more obviously avant-garde, including the Abstract Expressionists, etc. I don't think anyone with a modicum of psychological savvy could overlook Wyeth.

  2. I think you're right, Art. I don't think Wyeth will be regarded as a minor painter at all. There are too many like the one I posted.
