I attended Ed's lecture at the Library Company of Philadelphia the other night and it was excellent. Ed is one the principal advocates for a view of Poe and other Philadelphia writers of his time that seriously challenges the conventional narrative of American literary history, according to which Poe was a kind of aberration. Actually, he seems to have been at the center of a major group of writers who could well be thought of as the ancestors of noir.
Here's a podcast of Ed's talk: Ed Pettit, the “Philly Poe Guy”: Edgar Allan Poe and the Philadelphia Gothic Tradition.
Scroll down a bit and you can also listen to Christopher Looby, "The Paradox of Philadelphia Gothic."
