... newspapers aren't the lifeblood of anything if they are merely an adjunct of the state. Independent journalism is valuable, but only if it is truly independent. A newspaper that is bankrolled by the state, even if it's only a loan, is going to have a strong interest in not criticizing the state.
Indeed.
Sorry, if people don't want to buy your product, either change the product or close the shop.
It's interesting when you see public or private media doing this.
ReplyDeleteDo you think this is part of our culture of entitlement? When everyone has taken to heart that "pursuit of happiness" clause that the Founders wrote, to the point where we all think we're entitled to food, shelter, and income? I'm more of an anarchist than a Republican, but it's a fair question: how far can we take our entitlements?
Of course, when it comes to corporate welfare, I have pretty strong opinions. I usually think it's a bad idea. I'm still waiting for someone to explain why we had to rush to bail out Wall St. with taxpayer monies, but balked at supporting the Detroit auto industries, which employ far more average folk for a greater total of actual jobs. Still makes no sense.
I, too, am more of anarchist (the philosophical sort, of course) and I agree. And being allowed the "pursuit of happiness" is not to guarantee its acquisition.
