Most of his commenters - not all - react angrily, and completely miss the point that his article is about such a reaction. Regarding what John Maddox is quoted as saying, churches do have doctrines, and their members, by denying those doctrines, can become heretics. But science is not a church with an orthodox creed. So his analogy is not only wrong, but also pernicious. Simply to entertain the idea of burning a book you disagree with is to abandon the principles of rational discourse. If Sheldrake is so wrong - and I can't begin to pass judgment on that - his error can be demonstrated. And there should be an end on it.
