Hi Frank, it's a shame that I have never heard of Stokes. Indian historiography of the independence struggle paints all Westerners as evil, and we have few portraits of genuinely good people supporting the Indian cause (Annie Besant comes to mind). But mostly, perhaps due to the larger-than-life image of Gandhi here, there is a tendency to keep the westerners out of the discourse. Thanks for bringing the story of this truly Christian man to light.
