... by daring art - and taking issue with Ms. Kakutani: Littell's scary accomplishment.

I think Kakutani was off base, and for this reason: Littell's book is a microscopic examination of the mind and soul of a German perpetrator of the Holocaust who has never heard the term “the Holocaust.” To me that's the quiet, and scary, accomplishment of the book.
