Two brief comments:
First, Horgan's experience is very similar to that which literary critic Van Wyck Brooks, in his autobiography - decribes himself having in a mental hospital after a severe psychotic breakdown.
Second, the whole matter of God's fear, etc., involves an anthropomorphizing of God, attributing to God human reactions.
But these are off the top of my head, and Henry's post deserves more pondering.
