This has nothing to do with freedom of speech, because it doesn't involve government censorship in any way: it's editorial and institutional discretion.
I quite agree, Daniel. They're free to do as they like, including be, as you put it so nicely, spineless. Of course - and I say this as someone who spent a good may years working for various institutions, both public and private, spinelessness pretty much comes with the territory.
