It is my settled opinion, after some years as a political correspondent, that no one is attracted to a political career in the first place unless he is socially or emotionally crippled.
I admire Auberon Waugh -- I admire all the Waughs, Evelyn, Alec, Auberon, and Alexander (and the non-related Hillary) -- but I think this is just wrong-headed and spiteful. People go into politics because they think various things and are various things -- perhaps usually not terribly noble -- but to broad-brush them all as socially or emotionally crippled is just not believable. Perhaps they do get that way after having been in office too long, I will concede.
